Free Maternity Movement Classes for Women and New Mothers

Pregnancy and early motherhood can bring joy, change, tiredness, uncertainty and a whole new relationship with the body. Gentle movement can offer a steady place to return to, especially when it is offered in a calm, accessible and supportive setting.

At The Creative Hearts, movement sits alongside creativity and community. The aim is simple: create welcoming spaces where people can move, learn, express themselves and connect with others. That includes children discovering art, adults trying a new creative skill, and women taking time to care for their wellbeing during pregnancy and after birth.

The Maternity Movement Project brings this approach to women during pregnancy and the first two years after giving birth. Through free yoga and movement sessions, participants can explore breathing, stretching, balance, gentle strengthening and relaxation in a way that respects the changing needs of the body.

These sessions are not about performance or pushing limits. They are about confidence, comfort and connection.

Movement can support wellbeing through each stage of maternity

The body changes throughout pregnancy, birth and the postnatal period. Those changes can affect posture, balance, breathing, strength, energy and confidence. A gentle class gives people time to notice those changes without judgement.

The Creative Hearts’ Yoga & Movement programmes use accessible forms of exercise that can be adapted to different levels of experience. Some participants may have practised yoga before. Others may be stepping onto a mat for the first time. Both are welcome.

A typical session may include:

  • Gentle stretching to support mobility and ease everyday movement

  • Breathing practices to encourage calm and body awareness

  • Balance work to build steadiness and confidence

  • Gentle strengthening to support functional movement

  • Relaxation to create a pause in a busy week

  • Simple movement skills that can be carried into daily life

The value often lies in the small details. Learning how to move from sitting to standing with more awareness. Finding a breathing rhythm that helps during a stressful moment. Noticing where the body feels tense. Feeling safe enough to rest.

For new mothers, movement may also support the process of returning to activity at a pace that feels right. After birth, bodies need time, care and patience. A supportive class can help people reconnect with movement gently, rather than feeling pressure to “get back” to anything.

Because pregnancy and postnatal recovery are personal, participants should follow guidance from their midwife, GP or health visitor if they have any concerns. The classes are designed to support wellbeing, but they do not replace medical advice.

The Maternity Movement Project is built around accessibility

The Free Maternity Movement Classes for Women and New Mothers are part of The Creative Hearts’ wider commitment to accessible wellbeing. Cost should not be a barrier to taking part in community-based movement, especially during a life stage when time, money and energy can all feel stretched.

The Maternity Movement Project supports women during pregnancy and the first two years after giving birth. That time frame matters. Support is often focused on pregnancy and the very early weeks after birth, but many women continue to need care, connection and confidence long after the newborn stage.

A free class can offer a regular point of support. It gives participants a reason to leave the house, meet others, and do something for themselves. For some, that may be the most valuable part of the week.

Accessible movement also means creating a space where different bodies, backgrounds and experiences are respected. A good maternity movement session should feel welcoming to someone who is nervous, tired, new to exercise, returning after a difficult birth, or simply looking for a gentle way to move.

At The Creative Hearts, accessibility is shaped by a few clear principles:

No pressure to be experienced

Gentle pace

Supportive atmosphere

Community setting

Sessions are suitable for people who are new to yoga or movement.

Movements can be adapted to suit different needs and comfort levels.

The focus is care, confidence and connection, rather than competition.

Classes are created to help people feel part of something local and welcoming.

This approach helps movement feel possible. A participant does not need to arrive feeling strong, flexible or confident. They only need a willingness to take part in a way that suits their body on that day.

Creativity and movement share the same purpose

The Creative Hearts is known for more than movement classes. It also delivers accessible art workshops for children, young people, adults and the wider community. These sessions include drawing, painting, crafts, mosaics and other hands-on creative activities.

At first, art and yoga may look like separate activities. One uses a paintbrush or tile. The other uses breath, balance and movement. Yet they often support people in similar ways.

Both can help people:

  • Express themselves without needing the perfect words

  • Try something new in a safe setting

  • Build confidence through small, steady progress

  • Spend time with others in a shared activity

  • Feel calmer through focus and routine

  • Develop skills that continue outside the session

Creativity can be especially powerful because it allows people to take part at their own pace. A child making a collage, a young person working with colour, an adult learning mosaic skills and a mother resting in a breathing practice may all be doing something different. The deeper purpose is shared.

That purpose is wellbeing through participation.

There is no need to be “good at art” to enjoy a creative workshop. There is no need to be “good at yoga” to benefit from gentle movement. The Creative Hearts builds programmes around the belief that everyone should have the chance to learn, create, move and connect, regardless of age, experience or ability.

This matters because community wellbeing is not created by one type of activity. Some people find calm through movement. Others find it through making something with their hands. Many people need both at different times.

For women in pregnancy and early motherhood, this kind of choice can be meaningful. A movement class may support the body. A creative session may offer expression, focus and companionship. Together, they create more routes into support.

Community connection can reduce isolation

Pregnancy and new motherhood can feel busy and lonely at the same time. Appointments, feeding, recovery, sleep changes and family responsibilities can fill the day, yet meaningful adult connection may become harder to find.

Community sessions can help by creating repeated, low-pressure opportunities to meet others. It does not need to be intense. A short conversation before class, a shared laugh during a balance exercise, or simply recognising familiar faces each week can help someone feel more connected.

The Maternity Movement Project is part of a wider vision of inclusion and participation. The Creative Hearts designs programmes that bring people together through art, yoga, movement and creative experiences. The setting matters as much as the activity. People are more likely to return when they feel safe, respected and welcome.

That sense of welcome can be built through small choices:

  • Clear instructions

  • Gentle pacing

  • Friendly facilitators

  • Space to rest

  • Respect for different abilities

  • No pressure to share personal details

  • Activities that allow people to join in at their own level

For some women, a maternity movement class may be their first step into a wider community programme. They may later join an art workshop, bring a child to a creative session, or recommend a class to a friend. In this way, one free session can open the door to ongoing support.

What to expect from a gentle maternity movement session

Trying a new class can feel daunting, especially during pregnancy or after having a baby. Knowing what to expect can make the first step easier.

A gentle maternity movement session usually begins with arrival time. Participants may settle onto mats, speak with the facilitator and find any support they need, such as cushions or blankets. The pace is calm from the start.

The class may then move through simple breathing and body awareness. This gives everyone a chance to notice how they feel that day. Some days the body may feel mobile and ready to move. Other days may call for a slower, softer practice.

Movement is likely to include seated, standing or supported postures. Balance work may be included in a safe, steady way. Stretching and gentle strengthening may focus on everyday movement rather than complex poses.

Relaxation often comes near the end. This may be a quiet rest, guided breathing or a gentle pause before returning to the rest of the day.

Participants are usually encouraged to listen to their body throughout. That might mean taking a break, changing position or choosing a smaller movement. In an inclusive class, adaptation is normal. It is part of the practice.

Helpful things to bring may include comfortable clothes, water and anything personally useful for comfort. New mothers may need to plan around feeding, childcare or travel. The Creative Hearts’ wider community ethos means the focus stays on making participation as possible and welcoming as it can be.

The Creative Hearts brings care, creativity and movement together

The Creative Hearts is a Barnet-based non-profit organisation dedicated to using creativity, movement and community connection as tools for wellbeing, inclusion and participation. Its programmes serve children, young people, women, families and the wider community.

What connects the work is a belief in access. People should not need specialist skills, high confidence or lots of money to take part in meaningful creative and wellbeing activities. Programmes are designed to bring people together through shared experience.

The Maternity Movement Project fits naturally within that mission. It offers women a free, supportive way to care for their physical wellbeing during pregnancy and the early years of motherhood. It also reflects a wider understanding of wellbeing, one that includes confidence, self-expression, relaxation and connection.

Whether someone joins through a yoga mat, a sketchbook, a craft table or a mosaic project, the invitation is the same. Come as you are. Take part in a way that feels possible. Build skills, meet others and feel supported.

Taking the first step

Free community classes can make a real difference because they lower the barriers to care, movement and connection. The first session does not need to be a big commitment. It can simply be a chance to try gentle movement, meet others and notice how it feels to take time for yourself.

The Creative Hearts continues to build welcoming spaces through yoga, movement, art and creative workshops. The Maternity Movement Project is one part of that wider work, supporting women through pregnancy and the first two years after giving birth.
